The SMU Mustangs are looking to bolster their wide receiver corps with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This move follows the graduation of their top receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively contributed over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players. Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins noted Smith's size and ability to make contested catches, while highlighting Hale's speed and evasion skills. Hale, a former five-star recruit, faced challenges at Alabama due to a knee injury but has shown promise at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens has praised Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which he believes will aid the team's offensive strategy. Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, known for his aggressive playing style.
Senior Yamir Knight is also returning after being named Offensive MVP in the Holiday Bowl, and sophomore Jalen Cooper is expected to take on a larger role. With the season opener against Florida State approaching on September 7, the team is focused on building chemistry and finalizing their depth chart.
Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward noted that Hale and Smith's presence is fostering a competitive environment that enhances the team's overall performance.
