McKinney City Council members are scheduled to receive a staff update on proposed improvements to State Highway 5 during a work session scheduled for July 7. The meeting will take place at 3 p.m. at McKinney City Hall, located at 401 E. Virginia St. The session will be livestreamed for residents who cannot attend in person.

According to city documents, plans are in development to reconstruct and widen State Highway 5 into a divided four-lane road between McMakin Street and Power House Street. Design work is currently underway, and the Texas Department of Transportation is expected to begin construction in late 2027 or early 2028.

As part of the broader project, the city is contributing funds for additional enhancements along the corridor. These improvements include median-mounted roadway lighting and turn lanes. City staff is also planning an enhanced at-grade crossing between East Virginia Street and East Louisiana Street.

The proposal for the enhanced at-grade crossing follows the loss of $15 million in federal funding for the Lower 5 Plaza project. That earlier plan called for a bridge at ground level and a park extending underneath State Highway 5. During a meeting in September 2025, council members voted on a resolution to redirect efforts toward additional improvements along the corridor.

City staff will present the update to receive direction from council members as they continue to coordinate with the Texas Department of Transportation and the North Central Texas Council of Governments. The goal is to incorporate the additional improvements along the corridor. McKinney is about 7 miles south of Melissa.

Further details regarding the specific scope of the city-funded enhancements or the final design specifications were not provided in the source material.
