C.J. Stroud is seeking a contract extension worth $60 million per year, while the Houston Texans are offering $50 million, according to a report from fansided.com. The quarterback remains under contract through 2027 because Houston exercised his fifth-year option.
Stroud threw for 4,105 yards with 23 touchdowns and five interceptions as a rookie. In each of the next two seasons, he passed 3,000 yards but stayed below 20 touchdown passes and had more interceptions than during his first year. Houston has said the extension would be addressed next offseason if no deal is completed before Week 1.
The Texans are set to open at 1 p.m. Sunday, though the report cites Dak Prescott reaching an agreement with the Dallas Cowboys shortly before their 2024 opener as evidence a late agreement remains possible.
The report also compares the negotiations with Baker Mayfield’s deal with Tampa Bay. Mayfield, entering the final year of his contract, eventually signed a three-year agreement averaging $55 million annually. Stroud has another season remaining and could receive a franchise tag afterward.
Houston’s losses to Pittsburgh and New England last postseason, Tank Dell’s injury history, offensive-line problems and the running game are also cited. His 2026 season could affect whether the Texans consider him worth $60 million annually.
