In the race for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican John Cornyn, both candidates have introduced plans aimed at improving affordability for Texans. Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee and Texas Attorney General, released his proposal first, followed by James Talarico, the Democratic nominee and a state representative. Melissa is about 38 miles north of Dallas, making these proposals particularly relevant for local voters.

Paxton's plan, titled Protecting the Texas Promise, focuses on federal tax deductions. It includes a $25,000 deduction for personal medical expenses and health insurance costs, along with an additional $25,000 deduction for each dependent. First-time homebuyers would benefit from a $50,000 deduction, and those relocating to a new primary residence would also receive a $50,000 down payment deduction.

Furthermore, a $5,000 deduction would cover expenditures related to healthy living, such as gym memberships and nutrition plans. Paxton aims to double the federal child tax credit to $4,400 for each child under 17 and make permanent tax-deferred investment accounts for children, referred to as Trump Accounts.

On the other hand, Talarico's plan, called the New American Dream, emphasizes wages and debt relief rather than tax deductions. He proposes to eliminate tax breaks for the wealthiest 1% to redirect $1 trillion towards the middle class, along with universal childcare, an increase in the minimum wage, and expanded overtime pay.

Talarico also advocates for the cancellation of medical debt and the establishment of an AI dividend, which would generate revenue from artificial intelligence companies to benefit Americans. He has framed the affordability issue as a governance challenge, linking it to corruption in the economy.
