The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is preparing to open its third commercial airport, with McKinney National Airport (DTX) scheduled to begin operations later this year. Avelo Airlines has been selected as the inaugural carrier for the facility, announcing plans to launch five nonstop routes beginning in November. The airline will establish a base at the airport, housing two Boeing 737-800 aircraft and approximately 100 crew members.
The new terminal, a 46,000-square-foot structure, is currently under construction and is expected to debut alongside the commercial flights. The airport is situated in Collin County, located roughly 30 miles from both Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field. McKinney is about 7 miles south of Melissa.
Avelo Airlines revealed the specific destinations and schedules for the initial service. Flights to Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Southwest Florida, Orlando, and Tampa will commence in November. The Las Vegas route begins on November 12 with four weekly departures. Service to Fort Lauderdale and Tampa starts on November 19, each offering four weekly flights. The Southwest Florida route launches on November 11 with two weekly flights, while the Orlando service begins on November 12 with five weekly departures.
The selection of Avelo, an ultra-low-cost carrier, aligns with the airport's goal of providing an alternative to the region's major hubs. The airline's business model focuses on discounted fares and add-on fees, similar to other budget carriers. This move fills a gap in the market following the collapse of Spirit Airlines in May, which previously served the Dallas area.
Avelo has previously attempted to revitalize smaller airports, such as Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut, which had struggled to maintain passenger service. The airline recently abandoned its West Coast route network due to financial pressures, but industry observers view the McKinney launch as a strategic entry into a niche market with limited competition from larger airlines.
