McKinney National Airport has initiated its first commercial airline service, marking a significant operational shift for the facility. Avelo Airlines is the carrier providing this new connectivity, which offers travelers an alternative to driving to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport or Dallas Love Field. The airport is located in McKinney, which sits approximately 7 miles south of Melissa.
The initial schedule features nonstop flights to five locations. Passengers can book direct routes to Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, and Tampa. These routes aim to link North Texas residents with popular vacation spots while facilitating visitor access to Collin County.
This launch follows earlier announcements made by Avelo regarding plans to establish its first North Texas operating base at the airport. The airline’s arrival serves as a milestone in the airport’s ongoing transformation. Concurrent with the start of commercial flights, the airport is proceeding with a $79 million passenger terminal project. This construction initiative is designed to support future airline expansion by introducing modern amenities, expanded security screening capabilities, and additional parking spaces.
City officials have long viewed commercial passenger service as a catalyst for economic development. They believe the service can attract new businesses, support tourism, and provide greater convenience for one of the nation's fastest-growing counties. To build anticipation for the launch, the airport hosted public events earlier this year. One such event, Display Day, allowed residents to view aircraft up close and learn about the airport's future before the first passenger flights departed.
