Frisco Lone Star maintained its perfect record with a 35-30 victory over Melissa at Coach Kenny Deel Stadium on Friday night. The contest, which marked the start of District 5-5AI play, saw the home team overcome a late-game push by the visitors to secure the win.
Lone Star, ranked second in 5A Division I, built a substantial lead early in the game. Quarterback Trey Wright, a four-star player, contributed significantly to the offense, rushing for a 69-yard touchdown in the second quarter. By the end of the first half, Lone Star led 28-14, having scored 21 unanswered points.
However, Melissa, which entered the game with a 1-3 record, committed three turnovers in the first half before shifting momentum in the second half.
Melissa outscored Lone Star 16-7 after the break, narrowing the deficit. Quarterback Turner Wilkie led the charge, scoring on a one-yard run and later connecting with Jeremiah Tabor on a 14-yard pass. Despite these efforts, Melissa failed to complete the comeback.
The game was decided in the final minute when Bryant Robinson, a three-star pledge to Clemson, intercepted a pass with 1:01 remaining. Robinson recorded two interceptions during the contest.
Lone Star coach Jeff Rayburn praised his defensive unit for standing up when it mattered most. He noted that while his team made mistakes and did not play smart football at times, Melissa possessed a talented defense. Rayburn described Robinson as one of the best players in the country.
