Frisco Lone Star improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in district play after defeating Melissa 35-30 in a District 5-5A Division I contest at Coach Kenny Deel Stadium on Friday night. The Rangers, who entered the game undefeated, faced a determined Cardinals squad that mounted a fourth-quarter comeback before falling short.
Lone Star quarterback Trey Wright accounted for nine total touchdowns, throwing for more than 800 yards and rushing for 300 additional yards with five scores. He connected on touchdown passes of 75, 28, 58, and 4 yards to Zach Forbish, Karece Hoyt, Colen Perry, and Bear Tabor, respectively. Wright also scored on a 69-yard run early in the second quarter.
Melissa (1-3 overall, 0-1 district) trailed 28-7 late in the second half but rallied to close the gap. Turner Wilkie threw for three touchdowns for the Cardinals, including passes of 40 and 14 yards to Wyatt Harry and Tabor, along with a rushing score from one yard out. The Cardinals also added a safety in the final seconds of regulation.
The game remained tight until the final minute. With Lone Star leading 35-28 and just over a minute remaining, Bryant Robinson recorded his second interception of the night to halt Melissa’s drive. The Rangers attempted a fourth-down conversion that fell short, giving Melissa one last possession.
On the ensuing free kick, Melissa was tackled immediately, allowing the clock to expire. Lone Star’s defense secured the win by forcing four turnovers throughout the game. The Rangers had previously defeated Royse City, Cedar Hill, and Simon Gratz of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with scores of 41-?, 48-?, and 56-? in their prior three wins.
