The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is set to boost patrols on the state's waterways from July 3 to July 5 for the Independence Day weekend. This initiative is part of "Operation Dry Water," a national campaign aimed at promoting safe and sober boating practices.

The operation involves collaboration between Kentucky game wardens and various law enforcement agencies to heighten awareness of boating laws and to curb incidents related to alcohol and drug use on the water. Officials emphasize that substances can significantly impair judgment, balance, vision, and reaction times for both operators and passengers.

Captain Jerrod Alley, the boating law administrator for the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, noted that environmental factors, such as sun and wind, can exacerbate fatigue and impairments. He stated that all boating interactions require careful perception and decision-making, which can be severely hindered by intoxication. The aim of the wardens is to educate the public and mitigate risky behaviors on the water to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Boaters are advised to appoint a sober operator and ensure that all necessary safety equipment is onboard, in good condition, and easily accessible. Officials also highlighted that many fatal boating accidents occur when individuals fall overboard without wearing properly fitted life jackets.

For more information about Kentucky's boating regulations, individuals can refer to the Kentucky Fishing and Boating Guide, available online and at locations where fishing and hunting licenses are sold. Additional details regarding the national campaign can be found through Operation Dry Water.

In case of emergencies, boaters should dial 911. For non-emergency situations, they can contact 800-25-ALERT (800-252-5378), reach out to local law enforcement, or visit the nearest Kentucky State Police post. Marine radio Channel 16 can also be utilized to communicate with local marinas.

Operation Dry Water is an annual initiative coordinated by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard and law enforcement agencies across the country.
