A Melissa police officer has been placed on leave after fatally shooting an armed man during a response to a disturbance call on Sunday night. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on the 2600 block of E. Melissa Road.

According to the Melissa Police Department, officers arrived at the residence and encountered an armed individual along with another person inside the home. During the encounter, an officer discharged their firearm. The armed man sustained injuries from the gunfire and received first aid at the scene before being transported to a hospital, where he later died.

No other injuries were reported during the incident. The identity of the deceased man has not been released to the public. Police have not provided details regarding the nature of the disturbance or the specific circumstances that led to the shooting.

The involved officer is currently on routine administrative leave while the department conducts an internal review of the event. Additionally, the Texas Rangers have taken over a separate criminal investigation into the shooting.

Due to the ongoing nature of both investigations, the Melissa Police Department stated that no further information will be released at this time. Details regarding the outcome of the internal review or the criminal probe are not yet clear.
