Avelo Airlines is selling tickets for McKinney National Airport, where flights will operate Wednesday through Monday and pause Tuesdays. McKinney is about 7 miles south of Melissa. The airport, identified in booking systems as DTX, is scheduled to open its new passenger terminal Nov. 11, the city announced Sept. 24.
The Houston-based carrier's first route, Fort Myers, begins Nov. 11. Las Vegas and Orlando follow Nov. 12, with Tampa and Fort Lauderdale starting Nov. 19. Four more destinations begin in December. Atlanta and Denver start Dec. 16, each with four weekly flights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Nashville and New Orleans begin Dec. 17, each with two weekly flights on Thursday and Sunday.
Avelo will station three 184-seat Boeing 737-800 jets at DTX. The airline expects to bring more than 100 jobs, including pilots, flight attendants, aircraft technicians, ground-handling workers and customer service workers. Ignacio Flores, airports director for the FAA's Southwest Region, gave the airport's operating certificate to McKinney aviation director Ken Carley. The city approved $58 million in construction contracts in May 2025 on a 4-2 vote after voters rejected a $200 million airport bond in May 2023, with 58.69% voting no.
