Melissa, Texas — Five community colleges across Texas have secured federal clearance to distribute Workforce Pell student financial assistance for compressed vocational courses, establishing an expedited track for students entering specialized employment sectors. The policy rollout coincides with an additional $10.4 million United States Department of Labor grant designated to broaden workforce-aligned instruction at two-year institutions across the state.

The federal funding will sustain a four-year initiative administered by an alliance of Texas community college systems under the leadership of the Alamo Colleges District, with Northwest Vista College serving as the central organizing campus. State education officials project that the broader training framework will reach approximately 22,000 students seeking industry-recognized credentials in fields such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, mechanical systems, and energy technology.

"Texas students now have federal aid for short-term job training at five community colleges," Governor Greg Abbott stated in an announcement highlighting the federal decisions. "Those colleges earned approval for programs that lead to high-demand jobs in health care, energy, construction, and the skilled trades."

Under the Department of Education approvals, the five colleges will offer nine short-term technical programs. Kilgore College will provide training in electric power technology, phlebotomy, and pharmacy technology; Weatherford College will deliver basic and advanced CNC machining along with basic HVAC instruction; Texas Southmost College will offer structural welding; Central Texas College will provide pharmacy technician coursework; and San Jacinto College will offer a phlebotomy technician program.

In northeastern Collin County approximately 35 miles north of Dallas, Melissa continues to experience rapid community growth along the U.S. Route 75 corridor.
