MELISSA, Texas — Texans enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program who lost food to recent flooding now have more time to request replacement benefits, Governor Greg Abbott announced July 22. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission said it won federal approval to lengthen the application window.

Residents of Bandera, Blanco, Frio, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Uvalde and Val Verde counties who receive SNAP may seek replacement benefits for ruined food through August 3, 2026, the governor's office said. The state said money will appear on Lone Star Cards within two business days of a request.

"Families who lost food in the recent floods now have more time to request SNAP replacement benefits," Abbott said in a statement. "This deadline extension through August 3 will help put meals on the table for those in need."

The commission said it asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Administration to approve the longer filing period. People can request a replacement at a local HHSC office, or use form H1855 by mail or fax if travel is hard because of age, disability or distance.

"HHSC is committed to helping Texans affected by the devastating flooding in July," HHSC Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said. "These replacement benefits will help ensure feeding their families is one less worry as they focus on recovering and rebuilding."

People in Melissa can locate an office and check eligibility at YourTexasBenefits.com, or call 2-1-1 for food and shelter help, the state said.
