Melissa High School's choir has set a new record for both the school and the district in the Texas Music Educators Association's All-State audition process, Melissa ISD announced Friday.
Seventeen Melissa singers took part in the second round of auditions. Twelve of them earned places in the TMEA Region 25 All-Region Choir, and two advanced to the third round of the All-State process, according to the district. Melissa ISD said that result is the best the program has produced.
How the auditions work
The All-State process is a series of elimination rounds. According to an earlier district announcement, roughly 20,000 students across Texas start auditioning each September, and by January only about 2% of them are named to a Texas All-State Choir.
For this round, the district said, students had two and a half weeks to learn two collegiate-level audition pieces before singing them for judges. Melissa ISD said in September that the second round was scheduled for Oct. 6 at Princeton High School.
What comes next
The two Melissa singers who advanced will audition again on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Plano East Senior High School in the third round, where they will compete for a chance to move further in the selection process.
The choir program had already marked a milestone in late September, when the district reported that 17 of its students had made it past the first round.
