A Dominant Home Opener

Texas Tech Red Raiders established their early-season form with a commanding 33-10 victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Saturday at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock. The Red Raiders, playing in front of a crowd of 60,229, controlled the game from the opening whistle, building a substantial lead that proved insurmountable for the visiting Wildcats.

This result improves Texas Tech’s record to 1-0, while Abilene Christian drops to 0-2 on the year.

First Half Momentum

The Red Raiders struck first and often in the opening period. Quinten Joyner broke the scoring deadlock with a 14-yard run, followed shortly by J’Koby Williams, who capped a drive with a five-yard touchdown run. Both scores were secured by Stone Harrington’s extra points, giving Texas Tech a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats managed to keep the game close into the second quarter, with Brandon Perez connecting on a 41-yard field goal to make it 17-3. However, Harrington responded with a 23-yard field goal, extending the home team’s advantage to 17-0 before the halftime break. The first half saw Texas Tech outscore Abilene Christian 17-3, setting the tone for the rest of the contest.

Second Half Control

The Red Raiders continued their offensive pressure in the third quarter. Stone Harrington showcased his range, successfully converting three field goals from 28, 33, and 45 yards out. These consecutive kicks pushed the lead to 26-3, effectively neutralizing any chance of a comeback for the Wildcats.

Will Hammond, the Red Raiders’ signal-caller, demonstrated his accuracy throughout the game, completing 26 of 33 passes for 298 yards and one touchdown, despite throwing one interception. His performance was a key factor in maintaining the Red Raiders’ offensive rhythm.

Final Quarter Standings

In the fourth quarter, the game concluded with a pair of scoring plays that finalized the 33-10 margin. Hammond found Malcolm Simmons for a 64-yard touchdown pass, with Harrington adding the extra point to make it 33-3. Shortly after, Alex Broome of Abilene Christian returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown, with Brandon Perez adding the extra point to close the game at 33-10.

While Broome’s return provided a late spark for the Wildcats, the damage was already done. J’Koby Williams also contributed on the ground for Texas Tech, rushing for 71 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Kenny Johnson led the receiving corps with 76 yards on four catches.

For Abilene Christian, John David Black completed 18 of 32 passes for 119 yards, and Cristian Driver caught eight passes for 93 yards, but it was not enough to overcome the Red Raiders’ superior execution.
