As the new school year approaches, shoppers in Melissa can take advantage of Texas' tax-free weekend from August 7 to August 9, 2026. During this period, many essential back-to-school items will be exempt from state and local sales tax, which can amount to 8.25 percent combined.

Eligible items include most clothing and footwear priced at under $100 each, along with student backpacks, with a limit of 10 per purchase, and a designated list of school supplies, also under $100 each. The tax exemption applies to purchases made in Texas stores or online from Texas-based sellers.

Notably, certain items such as jewelry, handbags, watches, computers, and clothing designed for athletic or protective use do not qualify. Rentals and services for alterations or cleaning are also excluded. Shoppers will not need any coupons or certificates, as the discount will be applied automatically at checkout for qualifying items.

A full list of eligible items is available from the Texas Comptroller.
