Texas Christian University has reinstated media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, ending a dispute that followed the newspaper's coverage of a locker room altercation involving Jacob Fields, a former TCU safety, and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma. This incident, which occurred on August 13, resulted in Fields' dismissal from the team and his arrest for aggravated assault that caused serious bodily harm.
Ezukanma suffered severe injuries, including a brain bleed and a concussion, which led to a three-day hospitalization. TCU reported that both parties engaged in "productive discussions" and reached an agreement to move forward. The initial decision to revoke the Star-Telegram's credentials received significant attention, particularly as more serious details about the incident became known.
The newspaper had referenced an unnamed source that implied Fields was singled out by teammates, a claim that was later amended to eliminate any suggestion of bullying.
Athletic director Mike Buddie noted that the reporting had created a damaging narrative, leading to threats directed at Fields and his family. After the credential revocation, the Star-Telegram was unable to cover TCU athletic events, including the season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, although their reporter still attended the game without formal credentials.
With the restoration of access, TCU aims to redirect focus back to the football season, even as the legal matters surrounding Fields and Ezukanma's condition remain unresolved.
