Dallas plans to use three members of its 2026 rookie class in expanded defensive roles when it faces Baltimore on Sunday. Caleb Downs and Jaishawn Barham, two of the Cowboys’ top selections, are expected to start, while Malachi Lawrence is set to handle rotation snaps.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team intended to put its younger players on the field in substantial roles. He called Downs an elite player and said Barham has created major turnovers when given playing time. Schottenheimer also highlighted Lawrence’s pass-rushing ability, while noting that mistakes are part of the rookies’ continued development.
The rookies’ increased involvement comes after several Dallas defenders missed Wednesday’s practice. Cobie Durant, Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke were among the defensive backs absent, and linebacker DeMarvion Overshown also did not participate.
