He remarked that the team's progress is 'night and day' compared to last season, crediting the new coaching staff and a rigorous training program for this transformation.
In the 2025 season, the Cowboys faced challenges under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, finishing last in the NFL for opponent passing yards and points allowed. They also ranked 30th in total yards allowed and were tied for 22nd in sacks. This contrasts sharply with the previous years under Dan Quinn, who has since taken a coaching position with the Washington Commanders.
With Christian Parker now at the helm as the defensive coordinator, the Cowboys have adopted a new mindset and strategy. Williams emphasized the impact of daily practices against a strong offense on their defensive growth. He noted, "It's been amazing — from where we started off in OTAs to where we are at now," while recognizing that there are still areas for improvement.
In August, the Cowboys extended Williams' contract for three years at $105.9 million, positioning him among the highest-paid interior defensive linemen. Last season, he achieved 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, and 53 combined tackles in 15 games, earning a strong overall grade from Pro Football Focus.
The team has also strengthened its defense through strategic signings, including safety Jalen Thompson, cornerback Cobie Durant, and veteran linebacker Rashan Gary. Additionally, they selected safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Cowboys will kick off their 2026 regular season on the road against the New York Giants on September 13.
