The Dallas Cowboys signed running back Israel Abanikanda off their practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury that is expected to require surgery. Abanikanda is projected to be Dallas’ third running back. Davis had been behind Javonte Williams on the depth chart through training camp while competing with Jaydon Blue.
Dallas waived Blue after the preseason and claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City. Demercado is slated to back up Williams in the season opener at the New York Giants. Fullback Hunter Luepke is also on the roster.
A projection for the game set its over-under at 48.5 points. Nick Harris selected Dallas to win and forecast a score below that mark, pointing to the Cowboys’ experience, opening week and possible weather.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is expected to relay many defensive calls through the communication helmet, though other players are prepared for different defensive packages. Dallas is also evaluating offensive-line options, including veteran tackle D.J. Humphries, who became available when Washington released him.
Arizona drafted Humphries 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter in 2016 before dealing with injuries through 2023.
