SMU senior Enzo Panozzo was named a co-recipient of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s defensive player of the week award after leading the Mustangs past NC State, 1-0. Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly also received the honor. The conference made the announcement Tuesday, according to SMU Athletics.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, served as captain during SMU’s ACC home opener and scored the only goal. The Mustangs limited NC State to eight shots, with two on target, while earning their fifth shutout of the season.
This is Panozzo’s first ACC weekly honor, while SMU has now received two conference weekly awards this season. Following the victory, the Mustangs moved to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. They have a 7-0-1 overall record and are 2-0-0 in ACC competition. SMU is scheduled to return to conference play Sunday against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
