Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to serious injuries sustained from an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident, which involved a punch and a kick to the head, occurred on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex. Ezukanma was reportedly looking at his phone when Fields attacked him, leading to a brain bleed and concussion.
Witnesses indicated that after the initial punch, Fields kicked Ezukanma, causing him to lose consciousness. Ezukanma later reported severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization where scans confirmed a brain bleed. He was transferred to the ICU and discharged on August 16, having also suffered a shoulder injury.
Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He turned himself in to authorities and was released on a $50,000 bond. In a message to TCU police, Fields expressed remorse for his actions.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes addressed the incident, emphasizing that it was out of character for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a local athlete from Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was expected to be a starting wide receiver for the season. TCU's next game is set for September 12 against Grambling.
