The Dallas Cowboys are in the process of evaluating their quarterback lineup as they approach the NFL roster cut deadline on August 30. A competitive struggle for the backup quarterback role behind Dak Prescott is underway, featuring Sam Howell and Joe Milton, both of whom have demonstrated their abilities during the preseason.

Reports suggest that Howell, who has played in 20 NFL games with 18 starts, might be let go in favor of Milton, who has reportedly excelled in recent preseason matchups. Ben Grimaldi from USA Today indicates that Howell's position is uncertain, noting that while he had an early lead, Milton's strong performances have altered the competition's landscape.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer commented on the situation, acknowledging that Howell was marginally ahead in the race but recognizing Milton's notable progress. He stated that the competition is quite close, with Howell having a slight edge.

The decision regarding whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster complicates matters. Retaining three quarterbacks could require cuts at other positions where depth is needed. Howell’s contract, which guarantees $2.5 million for the season, means the Cowboys would incur that expense even if he is released.

As training camp concludes, the Cowboys will finalize their decision, which may be influenced by their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints. Analysts suggest the possibility of both Howell and Milton remaining on the roster, but the competition remains intense, and the final decision is still pending.
