The Dallas Cowboys have officially released quarterback Joe Milton. Milton, who joined the team in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots, had been in competition for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell throughout the preseason.
Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado to their roster after claiming him off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which led to Milton's release to make room for Demercado on the 53-man roster.
During the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards, scoring once on the ground.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted his confidence in both Milton and Howell as potential backup quarterbacks. He recalled a conversation with Milton that showcased the quarterback's belief in his skills. Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulties of mastering the team's intricate offensive system, which demands a deep understanding from its quarterbacks.
Milton expressed that he felt increasingly comfortable with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and a second training camp, emphasizing the significance of grasping the playbook and executing plays effectively.
