The Dallas Cowboys are adjusting their offseason strategy ahead of their season opener against the New York Giants. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith will be out for a minimum of four weeks due to thumb surgery. T.J. Bass is expected to take over in his absence, with Schottenheimer expressing trust in the backup's capabilities.

In light of these developments, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hinted at the potential for a trade aimed at strengthening the defense. On his radio show, Jones mentioned that recent contract restructures have created substantial cap space, enabling the team to pursue new players. He remarked, "We're in play," regarding trades, with a clear focus on enhancing the defensive lineup.

The Cowboys recently restructured contracts for players including defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson, which resulted in $19 million in additional salary-cap space. These actions are seen as financial adjustments that do not change current player salaries but allow for greater flexibility in future years.

Jones noted that this newfound cap space could exceed $33 million by the 2026 season, potentially opening doors for acquiring key players. Possible targets include Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders, Jordyn Brooks from the Miami Dolphins, and free agent Bobby Wagner.

While specific trade details remain uncertain, Jones indicated a willingness to use high draft picks to improve the roster immediately, stating, "A top pick is expendable this year for me to add to somebody that meaningfully would help us now."
