Dallas opened its 2026 season with a 28-20 defeat against the New York Giants, committing eight penalties that cost 85 yards. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer called the result humbling and said the Cowboys failed to meet their standard or begin well on offense and defense.
New York received a strong performance from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who threw for 230 yards and gained another 54 on the ground. Dallas struggled when Dart left the pocket, allowing him to extend plays. Dak Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards, with touchdown throws to CeeDee Lamb and Javonte Williams.
Williams also scored on a run, but Dallas could not overcome its penalties and other execution problems.
A taunting penalty against Williams after a touchdown pushed Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point attempt farther from the uprights. Schottenheimer took responsibility for the penalties and said the coaching staff and players shared ownership of the mistakes. He said Dallas must improve its coaching, while younger players need to develop quickly.
The Cowboys had posted the NFL’s highest defensive average in 2025 at 30.1 points allowed per game and began this season with new defensive personnel. Dallas is scheduled to host Washington next Sunday.
