The Dallas Cowboys have made significant roster adjustments, particularly in the running back department, opting to retain Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke. Consequently, they have released 2025 draft picks Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the tough nature of these decisions, highlighting that both players were valued for their potential. He pointed out Malik Davis's consistent performance as a factor in the team's decision-making. Schottenheimer noted that Blue and Mafah might seek advice from Davis during this transitional period.
In an effort to enhance their roster, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer praised Demercado's versatility, especially regarding special teams contributions, and mentioned that offensive coordinator Klayton Adams's previous experience with him in Arizona influenced this move.
Schottenheimer was uncertain about the possibility of bringing Blue or Mafah back to the practice squad, stating there were no guarantees for either player. The Cowboys have added 13 players to their practice squad, which can include up to 16 players. They also have an allowance for one extra player because of the International Player Pathway program, which features defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye.
