Neal Brown, the head coach of the North Texas Mean Green, has raised serious concerns about the team's offensive line as preparations for the 2026 season begin. Following a recent practice, Brown remarked on the line's performance, indicating that it is not meeting the team's needs at this stage.
He pointed out specific issues, including a lack of toughness in the run game and inadequate pad level.
The offensive line was instrumental in North Texas' impressive 2025 season, where the team led the nation with 49 rushing touchdowns and was recognized for having the top-scoring offense. Last year's standout players included Gabe Blair, an offensive guard who earned First Team All-American Conference honors and was ranked as the third-best guard by Pro Football Focus.
With all five starting offensive linemen from last season having graduated, the team faces the task of rebuilding this critical unit. Brown noted that just two players, senior Johnny Williams IV and fifth-year Chandler Strong, have shown potential during fall camp, with Strong emerging as a notable performer.
Emphasizing the need for a complete lineup, Brown stated that it is impossible to compete effectively with only two offensive linemen, indicating that the coaching staff will evaluate all positions for competition, regardless of scholarship status. The urgency to enhance the offensive line's capabilities is pressing, especially with the first game scheduled for September 5.
