Carmello Brooks, a University of Houston football player, was in court Monday as two criminal cases moved forward. One involves an allegation that a pregnant person was assaulted. Nariah Harley, who is connected to that case, asked the judge to have prosecutors drop it and said police misunderstood what happened.
Harley said an argument occurred inside Brooks’ apartment last week. She said Brooks told her several times to leave, and after she refused, he carried her outside. According to Harley, Brooks called police because she would not leave. She said Brooks is the father of her baby and that she does not consider herself a victim.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body cameras recorded the encounter and that prosecutors will review the footage along with a 911 call Brooks made. The other case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County, where Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle during an argument involving another woman and her sister.
Family members said the people involved grew up together in Killeen and went to high school together. Harley is also from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said Brooks is suspended from the football team and hopes he can attend classes while the cases are pending.
