The Utah Jazz built a large lead through three quarters and held on for a 119-109 preseason victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday at the Delta Center. Darryn Peterson paced Utah with 14 points and five assists, while Mo Bamba added nine rebounds. The Jazz improved to 2-1 in the preseason, and the Spurs fell to 0-3.

Ja'Kobi Gillespie scored 25 points for San Antonio, which also got six assists from Jordan McLaughlin and 17 rebounds from Tarris Reed Jr.

Utah gains control early

Harrison Barnes made three 3-pointers in the quarter for San Antonio, while Jordan McLaughlin made three baskets, including a 25-foot 3-pointer.

The Spurs matched Utah 35-35 in the second quarter, but the Jazz carried a 68-61 advantage into halftime. San Antonio received scoring from Gillespie, McLaughlin and Keldon Johnson, while Utah maintained its cushion behind baskets from Peterson, Isaiah Collier, Lauri Markkanen and others.

Third-quarter separation

The Jazz widened the margin in the third quarter, outscoring San Antonio 31-17. Peterson opened the period with two baskets, then added a 23-foot running jumper. Collier hit a 23-foot 3-pointer, and Bamba scored twice on alley-oop dunks during Utah's 31-point quarter.

San Antonio cut into the deficit in the final period. Gillespie scored three consecutive 3-pointers during one stretch and finished the quarter with a driving layup. RJ Davis added a 24-foot step-back 3-pointer and a running layup, while Jon Elmore hit a 24-foot running jumper.

Utah answered with 3-pointers from Brice Sensabaugh and Tamar Bates, then got a running pullup from Harrison Ingram. The Spurs scored 31 points in the fourth, but the Jazz's early lead was enough to preserve the 10-point decision. Attendance at the Delta Center was 15,495.
