The Atlanta Hawks beat the San Antonio Spurs 123-116 in a preseason game Thursday at Frost Bank Center, using a 13-0 run late in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 23.
Spurs start fast
San Antonio, playing its first exhibition game, outscored Atlanta 39-20 in the opening quarter. The Hawks scored 42 points in the second to trail 69-62 at halftime, then won the third 31-26 to pull within 95-93.
The Spurs held a 109-108 lead with 6:01 left. Atlanta took over from there, going ahead for good on an Asa Newell alley-oop layup and pushing the margin to 121-109.
Who stood out
Newell led Atlanta with 16 points in 14 minutes, 11 of them in the final 5:49. Kingston Flemings had 15 points and five assists, and Dyson Daniels had 13 points and 11 rebounds.
For San Antonio, Dylan Harper scored 16 points with four assists, while Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia added 14 each. Victor Wembanyama had nine points and six rebounds in 17 minutes, and Keldon Johnson had seven rebounds.
San Antonio made 28 of 35 free throws but committed 22 turnovers. The announced crowd was 18,354. Preseason results do not count toward the regular-season standings.
