Justin Ray Deleon, 31, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Thursday for causing a fatal drunk driving crash in Grayson County last year. The sentence follows his conviction for Intoxication Manslaughter with a Vehicle.
Grayson County District Attorney John Kemit Hill stated that Deleon had been drinking in Prosper before driving into oncoming traffic along State Highway 289 in Dorchester. The collision occurred last October and resulted in a head-on impact with another vehicle, killing the other driver.
Testimony indicated that Deleon’s blood alcohol concentration was .174, which is more than twice the legal limit for drivers in Texas. He also had a prior DWI conviction from 2015.
District Attorney Hill used the case to highlight the dangers of impaired driving. He noted that many individuals view driving while intoxicated as a victimless offense, asking what happens when someone decides drinking is acceptable before getting behind the wheel.
