A Dominant Start
The Houston Cougars opened the floodgates early, building an insurmountable lead in the first quarter against the Southern Jaguars. Conner Weigman was instrumental in the opening period, connecting with Patrick Overmyer for a 9-yard touchdown pass and Amare Thomas for an 8-yard score.
The ground game complemented the aerial attack, as Re'Shaun Sanford II powered in from 9 yards out and Makhi Hughes crossed the goal line from 1 yard away. Jonathan Dimas successfully kicked all four extra points, capping a perfect first quarter where Houston scored 28 points to Southern’s zero.
Sustained Pressure
Houston did not slow down after halftime break. The Cougars added another seven points before the half when Weigman found Koby Young on a 43-yard pass. Keisean Henderson entered the game and immediately made an impact, throwing a 7-yard touchdown to Young and a 20-yard strike to John Hebert.
Both kicks by Dimas were good, pushing the halftime score to 49-6 in favor of the home team.
Third Quarter Surge
The scoring continued unabated in the third quarter. Henderson rushed for a 54-yard touchdown, and DJ Butler added another on the ground from 9 yards out. Hebert finished his day with a 7-yard rushing touchdown.
