Astros Extend Lead in Fourth

The Houston Astros defeated the Athletics 4-0 on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. The home team’s offense remained patient until the fourth inning, where the score was initially tied 0-0. In that frame, the Astros broke the deadlock when Paredes scored on a sacrifice fly hit to center by Walker.

This play brought the running score to 0-1 in favor of Houston. The Athletics failed to score in the bottom of the fourth, leaving the game tight heading into the middle innings.

Alvarez Powers Fifth-Inning Surge

The second half of the game saw the Astros build a decisive lead. In the fifth inning, Yordan Alvarez doubled to center, allowing Allen to score and extending the Astros' lead to 0-2. The momentum continued immediately after, as Paredes doubled to right field.

This hit drove in Alvarez, pushing the score to 0-3. The Astros’ bats were active in this inning, scoring two runs in a single half-frame. The Athletics’ pitchers struggled to contain the damage, as the home team capitalized on their opportunities to add to the scoreboard.

By the end of the fifth, the Astros had established a three-run cushion that they would maintain for the remainder of the contest.

Late Game Insurance

The Astros added their final run in the seventh inning. Alvarez doubled to shortstop, which allowed Delgado to cross the plate. This play secured the 0-4 final score.

The rest of the game saw no further scoring, with the Athletics unable to generate any runs in their remaining at-bats. The game ended with the Athletics shut out completely, as they failed to record a single run against the Houston pitching staff. The final tally stood at 4 runs for the Astros and 0 for the Athletics.

Pitching Performance and Records

Hayden Wesneski earned the win for the Astros, pitching five innings. He allowed one hit, no earned runs, walked three batters, and struck out four hitters. His record improved to 3-1.

On the Athletics side, J.T. Ginn took the loss. He pitched five innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs, while walking two and striking out four.

His record fell to 8-8. The remaining innings for Houston were handled by Bennett Sousa, Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert, and Enyel De Los Santos, all of whom pitched one inning each. The Athletics used Elvis Alvarado, Drew Rom, and Hayden Juenger in relief.

After the game, the Astros improved their record to 65-64, while the Athletics dropped to 49-80. Attendance at Daikin Park was 28,477.
