Melissa's residents are in the path of a new flood-watch window, and the city's emergency-alert guidance includes a detail worth checking now: National Weather Service alerts must be selected during registration.
The watch for Collin County begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, and continues until 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 2. The Weather Service expects 2 to 4 inches of rain across the watch area, with localized totals of 4 to 6 inches as showers and storms move slowly.
Flooding remains a possibility, not a confirmed condition throughout the city. Forecasters identify creeks, streams, low-lying ground and low-water crossings as areas where runoff could become a problem.
Melissa's weather-information page directs residents to Everbridge to manage alerts and recommends its public-safety app. It says National Weather Service alerts are optional and must be selected. Merely installing an app or having an account should not be mistaken for checking those preferences.
The same city resource provides utility-outage links and a way to report traffic-signal problems. Its flood guidance is straightforward: avoid water-covered roads and do not try to open storm drains or manhole covers.
