Overshown’s first practice work leaves Dallas a workload decision

DeMarvion Overshown went from Wednesday’s non-participation to limited work Thursday, adding a possible linebacker option for Dallas without announcing a Sunday return.

DeMarvion Overshown moved one step on Thursday: from no practice to limited work. For a Dallas defense still sorting out its personnel, that is a reason to evaluate another option.

After missing Wednesday with a hamstring issue, the linebacker was listed as a limited participant Thursday, according to the Cowboys’ 4:30 p.m. Central update. That DNP-to-LP move matters for a 2-3 team preparing to visit Green Bay on Sunday, but it does not establish that Overshown will play, start or handle his usual workload.

For Dallas, the value of the development is the choice it creates. Before Thursday, the club’s planning had to account for Overshown doing no work that week. Now the staff can consider whether a restricted version of him would help against the Packers, whether he needs more time, or whether the healthier alternative is the better football decision.

A practice designation opens that discussion; it does not settle it.

The rest of Thursday’s report shows why the Cowboys cannot treat every upgrade as the same kind of news. Joey Porter Jr. moved from limited Wednesday to full participation Thursday while dealing with an ankle issue.

That is a more substantial practice improvement for the secondary than Overshown’s change, though it still does not guarantee that Porter will play Sunday or receive a full allotment of snaps.

Ameer Speed also advanced from Wednesday’s absence to limited work with a knee issue. Cobie Durant, meanwhile, remained out for a second consecutive practice because of a hamstring issue. The defensive backfield therefore has one player moving sharply upward, another returning to the field in a limited capacity and a third still unable to practice.

Those are separate decisions, not one broad signal that the coverage group is repaired.

Overshown’s situation carries a different calculation. Dallas must determine whether the contribution possible on a limited workload justifies putting him into a game setting before he has completed a full week of practice. The answer may depend on how he responds Friday and on the role the staff would actually ask him to play.

A smaller assignment could be useful; it could also leave the defense managing another limitation in real time. Thursday alone cannot tell us which outcome is more likely.

There is an operational decision taking shape at the same time. Parker said Thursday that he will most likely remain on the sideline against Green Bay, though the Cowboys have not finalized that arrangement. Jerry Jones had said Tuesday that Parker would move to the booth, while head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Wednesday that the matter was still unsettled.

The shift in expectation is fresh, but the underlying issue is practical: Parker must decide whether proximity or perspective better serves the defense’s communication and organization.

At field level, Parker can receive information and address players during the action with less separation. From upstairs, he would gain a wider view and a calmer place to sort notes and calls. Neither location guarantees better defense. Mike Pettine’s presence adds another option, as the consultant can provide front-seven expertise and help with opponent preparation without taking over Parker’s play-calling authority.

Parker also disclosed Thursday that he had pursued Pettine earlier, including during offseason interviews, before family obligations delayed Pettine’s availability. Pettine previously hired Parker for his first NFL quality-control role with Green Bay in 2019. That relationship may make the consultant a useful sounding board, but it does not convert Thursday’s participation report into a medical or tactical verdict.

Friday gives the staff another chance to evaluate that hamstring. The choice after that is how much work Overshown can handle and whether the role makes the defense steadier. A partial return that merely creates another uncertainty is no shortcut to improvement.
